Knight's Granite Hills

Established: 1971

Location: Burke and Wills Track, 16 km north of Lancefield.

Winemaker: Lew Knight.

Important Varietals: Reisling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Personal Comments:

The best way to approach this winery is from Lancefield from the south. The signposts are quite well marked from that direction. From the north, off the Hume Highway, you would have to put even money on getting lost. After tossing a coin at two or three unposted T-intersections you are bound to get unlucky or find youself in Kyneton. It is much better if you hit a lucky streak and find yourself at the wine tasting area overlooking the vineyards and surrounded by granite rock outcoppings.

The first time my wife and I tried the Reisling here we both turned to each other and practically screamed "lychees". That must have been a bit of an aberrant year as I haven't found this quality to be so overpowering on subsequent visits. The Reisling is a still a fine cool climate drop and the Shiraz comes with a big reputation. Though I did notice that the most recent version of this varietal - the 1991 - was labelled as Heathcote Shiraz. Whether this is made fully from Heathcote fruit I have no idea, but I bought a few bottles to put down anyway.
