2008 Miles Franklin Award Winner

Steven Carroll was last night announced as the winner of the 2008 Miles Franklin Award for his novel The Time We Have Taken.

This is the third novel in an on-going series about a Melbourne surburb and follows the novels The Art of the Engine Driver and The Gift of Speed, both of which were previously shortlisted for this award. Carroll also won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Novel for the South-East Asia and South Pacific region for this book.

I would like to read this award winner but find neither my local library system nor Amazon.com have copies. I will try to locate a copy through Interlibrary Loan.

You can buy the book from Australia and have it shipped; type in "australian online bookseller" to Google and you'll get a list of possible booksellers. Be aware, however, that the price will be higher than you're used to. I believe the cover price for this novel is about $A28, which, given the current exchange rate of approx $A1 = $US0.95, results in a price of $US26.60. And then you have to add postage. We've been used to these prices for a fair while but they do come as a bit of a shock to non-Australians, or non-New Zealanders.

Thanks for the information about where to locate a copy of this book. My granddaughter is coming to Australia for World Youth Day next month so perhaps I will ask her to visit a bookstore and pick up a copy for me (in her spare time, of course!)

The book is available everywhere. She'll be able to pick it up at the airport bookshop.
