'TIS AN ILL WIND

After a long silence, Mr. William Hughes marked his return to the fray in the House of Representatives by a fierce attack on the Government's Per Capita proposals.

Welcome, our William! Not, perhaps too much
By Ministers and Party Whips and such,
   Who would secure, 'spite your anathema,
   A smooth, safe passage for Per Capita.

But by poor scribes, whose evanescent rhymes
Are penned in pain to suit these sorry times;
   By pale cartoonists, whose gaunt fingers creep
   To limn your form, unconsciously, in sleep:

By these you are thrice welcome to the lists.
Joust on, and flatten your antagonists!
   While comic artists lift a rousing cheer;
   For your face is their fortune, never fear.
