Dear Dad,

I have only just heard of your cruel misfortune through a letter from Bob. I missed the announcement in the papers.

I know a man usually dislikes receiving letters of this sort, so long as he knows, at least, that his friends do not forget.

I have been shocked and sincerely grieved, and I write now merely to let you [know] that you and Mother and the rest have my deep sympathy. Please tell them.
